Ohio Hispanic Coalition

The Ohio Hispanic Coalition started their Youth-Led Initiative Program – Youth in Action to focus in engaging a new age group as part of our current programming. OHCO established the Youth Planning Board, consisting of 10 dedicated teenagers ranging from ages 14 - 18 years old to conduct weekly team meetings, develop ideas, elaborate on existing challenges, research specific data, discuss important topics and challenges face, and plan for the implementation of the Youth-Led initiative.

The Youth in Action planning board, has developed a timeline for programming for the remainder of the 2022 – 2023 school year reflected in the activities and events that will be held throughout the year. The planning identified key areas of need in their lives and after meaningful discussion concluded on the following:

Based on current struggles, peer interaction, and individual testimony the needs of our youth are:

  • Mental Health

    • Dealing with Stress

    • What is Anxiety?

    • Expressing your Feeling

    • Suicide Prevention Awareness

  • Communication Skills

    • How to Express your Thoughts

    • Language and Professional Etiquette

    • Overcoming Fear of Public Speaking

  • Self-Identity

    • Connecting with your Culture

    • Macro and Microaggression

    • Diversity and Inclusivity

The youth planning board will continue to develop activities, events and community engagement strategies to prevent, decrease, and raise awareness to these topics in their community. The plan developed by the Youth in Action Planning Board is to continue holding weekly meeting at the west site location, establish partnerships with local organization that can provide professional support in specific topics, plan events for the public and present about these issues, and hold days of activities for the youth to engage in a fun and safe space that will address their needs and allow for development as they are entering their adulthood.
